10 Vehicle Checks to Make Before a Long Journey
A breakdown 200 miles from home is very different from one five minutes away. These 10 checks take 20 minutes and can save your entire trip.
The day before a long journey is the right time to run these checks — not the morning of, when you're already running late.
1. Engine Oil
Check level and top up if needed. If it needs frequent topping up, that's a sign of a problem to investigate.
2. Coolant
Level should sit between min and max. If it's consistently dropping, have the system pressure-tested for leaks.
3. Tyre Pressures
Check all four — and the spare. Long motorway driving on under-inflated tyres generates heat and increases blowout risk.
4. Tyre Tread
Run a 20p coin through the main grooves. Replace any tyre showing below 3mm before a long journey.
5. Spare Tyre or Tyre Inflation Kit
Do you actually have a serviceable spare? Or a tyre inflation kit with a valid-date sealant canister? Many drivers assume they do without checking.
6. All Lights
Check headlights, indicators, brake lights and fog lights. Carry a spare bulb kit for older vehicles.
7. Windscreen and Wipers
Fill the screenwash. Check for chips in the windscreen that could crack under motorway pressure. Replace any wipers leaving smears.
8. Battery
If your car is over 4 years old or has a history of slow starts, consider a battery test. Most fast-fit centres do this free.
9. Brakes
On a gentle test drive, do they feel firm and respond evenly? Any pulling to one side, vibration or unusual noise warrants attention before a long run.
10. Fuel (and AdBlue if applicable)
Fill up before you leave. Check the AdBlue level if your diesel vehicle requires it — some older vehicles won't restart with an empty AdBlue tank.
