Vehicle Recovery vs Roadside Assistance — What's the Difference?

Many drivers confuse recovery and roadside assistance — but they're very different services. Knowing which one you need could save you time and money.

When something goes wrong on the road, you'll either need someone to fix it on the spot — or someone to take the car away. Here's how to tell which applies to you.

Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance means a technician comes to your location and attempts to fix the problem there and then. Common roadside fixes include:

  • Jump-start — dead battery
  • Tyre change — spare fitting or puncture repair
  • Fuel delivery — running out of fuel
  • Lockout service — locked out of your vehicle
  • Minor electrical faults — loose connections, blown fuses
  • Roadside assistance is designed for problems that can be resolved quickly without moving the vehicle. Most breakdown cover policies include this as standard.

    Vehicle Recovery

Vehicle recovery means the car cannot be fixed at the roadside — it needs to be moved. Recovery is needed for:

  • Engine failure or serious mechanical fault
  • Accident damage
  • Transmission failure
  • Electrical failure that can't be fixed on the spot
  • Tyre damage when no spare is available
  • EV that has run out of charge
  • In recovery, your vehicle is loaded onto a flatbed transporter or towed to a garage, storage facility or your home.

Which One Do You Need Right Now?

Ask yourself: can the car move safely under its own power? If yes, roadside assistance may be enough. If no — or if you're unsure — call for recovery.

    Cost Difference

Roadside assistance callouts are generally cheaper than full recovery, but if you need recovery and the operator only offers assistance, you'll end up paying twice. Always describe your situation clearly when you call.
