What Is a Category S Write-Off — and Should You Buy One?
Tens of thousands of Category S write-offs are sold in the UK every year. Some are bargains. Others are money pits. Here's exactly what to look for before you buy.
Category S write-offs — previously known as Category C — are vehicles where the repair cost exceeds the car's market value but the structural damage is repairable. Here's the full picture.
What Category S Actually Means
The insurer has decided the repair cost isn't economical relative to the car's value. That doesn't mean the car is dangerous — it means the numbers didn't add up for the insurer. The 'S' stands for Structural, meaning some part of the vehicle's chassis, sill, or structural frame was damaged.
The DVLA Requirement
Once written off as Cat S, the vehicle must be re-registered with the DVLA before it can return to the road. You'll need a V5C and may need an inspection depending on the extent of repairs. The Cat S marker stays on the vehicle's history permanently — it will show on any HPI check.
What To Check Before Buying
The Price Discount
Cat S vehicles typically sell for 20–40% below equivalent undamaged vehicles. That discount can represent real value — or it can disappear quickly if hidden repairs are needed.
