Winter Driving Tips to Avoid a Breakdown in the UK

Cold weather is the single biggest cause of vehicle breakdowns in the UK. Follow these practical tips to keep your car running through the winter months.

Winter in the UK brings ice, frost, reduced visibility and cold-soaked batteries — all of which dramatically increase breakdown risk. Here's how to prepare your vehicle properly.

Check Your Battery

Cold temperatures reduce battery capacity significantly. If your battery is more than three years old, get it tested. A failing battery that starts fine on a warm morning may leave you stranded on a cold one.

Tyre Condition and Pressure

Tyre pressure drops roughly 1 PSI for every 10°F drop in temperature. Under-inflated tyres reduce grip on cold or wet roads and increase fuel consumption. Check pressures weekly in winter and inspect tread depth — the legal minimum is 1.6mm but 3mm is recommended for winter conditions.

Keep Fuel and AdBlue Topped Up

In very cold weather, running low on fuel can cause fuel line issues. Keep your tank at least a quarter full throughout winter. If your vehicle uses AdBlue, ensure the reservoir is topped up — an empty AdBlue tank can prevent the engine from starting.

Check Coolant Antifreeze Levels

Your engine coolant contains antifreeze to prevent the water jacket from freezing solid. Have the antifreeze concentration tested — it should protect to at least -25°C for UK winters.

Carry a Winter Emergency Kit

Pack a small bag with: high-visibility vest, warning triangle, torch, jump leads or a portable jump starter, ice scraper, blanket, and a small snack and water. This kit could be invaluable if you break down in a remote area.

Warm Up Gently

Modern engines don't need long warm-up periods, but pulling away gently for the first mile or two lets oil circulate properly and reduces wear. Avoid aggressive acceleration until the engine is at operating temperature.

Lights and Wipers

Check all lights are working and replace wiper blades that are leaving smears. Winter wiper blades are available that resist ice build-up. Keep your washer fluid filled with a proper screenwash — water alone will freeze in the jets and pipes.
