Understanding Your Car Warning Lights — and When to Pull Over

Your dashboard is trying to tell you something. Ignoring the wrong warning light can turn a small problem into an expensive breakdown. Here's what every light means.

Modern vehicles have dozens of warning lights, but some are far more urgent than others. Here's a quick guide to the ones that matter most.

Red Warning Lights — Stop Immediately

Red lights indicate a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Do not continue driving if any of these appear:

  • Engine Oil Pressure (oil can symbol): Pull over safely and switch off the engine immediately. Driving with no oil pressure will destroy your engine within minutes.
  • Engine Temperature (thermometer in water): Your engine is overheating. Pull over, switch off, and wait for it to cool before checking coolant levels.
  • Battery Charge (battery symbol): The charging system has failed. You may have very little driving time left before the car dies completely.
  • Brake System (exclamation mark in circle with BRAKE text): Brake fluid may be low or there is a serious brake fault. Do not drive — call for recovery.
  • Amber Warning Lights — Investigate Soon

Amber lights indicate a fault that should be checked but does not require stopping immediately:

  • Check Engine / Engine Management (engine outline): Could be anything from a loose fuel cap to a sensor fault. Have it diagnosed with an OBD reader.
  • Traction Control / Stability Control: The system has activated or has a fault. Drive carefully on slippery surfaces.
  • Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS): One or more tyres are significantly under-inflated. Check pressures when safe to do so.
  • AdBlue Warning: Your AdBlue reservoir is running low. Refill soon or the engine may not restart after shutdown.
  • Green and Blue Lights — Information Only

Green and blue lights are informational — cruise control active, high beams on, indicators working. No action required unless unexpected.

    The Golden Rule

When in doubt, stop safely and call a professional. Continuing to drive with a red warning light is the most common cause of catastrophic and expensive engine damage.
